abstract:
Each year almost 50 million travelers visit malaria endemic areas and 10,000 - 30,000 of them get illwith malaria after returning home. Risk is especially high in tropical Africa where 80-95% of infectionsare caused by Plasmodium falciparum.Chemoprophylaxis is fundamental for malaria prevention and the mostly used prophylactic regimens(choloroquine alone, or its association with proguanil, and mefloquine) are generally welltolerated.According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, US (CDC), only 34% of travelersused recommended malaria prophylaxis appropriate for their area of travel.
