Academic Article
Publication Date:
2013
abstract:
Our society requires and demands health professionals of increasingly broad and increasingly high calibration, able tomodulate their skills according to the needs and the requirements of the context. This survey (cross - sectional) has as its primary objective to collect information on the employment status of those whohave a Master degree in Nursing and Midwifery Science, and as its secondary objective to describe if and how the curriculumhas affected, according to self-assessments of the interviewed, the quality and the outcomes of nursing work. Thetool adopted for the data collection was a questionnaire constructed ad hoc.The survey was conducted from May to August 2011 on all those who had earned a degree in Nursing and Midwiferyat the UCSC (from A.A 2004-2005 to 2009-2010).The results show that in 44 cases out of 111 treated (40%) there was a change of employment status after obtaining theMaster’s Degree and of these 68% (30/44) states that the change is definitely linked to the achievement of the academictitle. All respondents state that the university curriculum has certainly helped to change some professional behaviors: researchutilization (93%), skills in problem solving at work (68%); greater ease to communicate the reasons underlying theirorganizational choices or decision making (70%); self-training abilities (63%).In the Italian context, it appears that the only career progression area remains almost exclusively the managerial one, despite the fact that educational programs have important subjects for Advanced Nursing Practice and Nursing Science.
