Introduction The evolution of university education has changed the definition of the educational offer and allowed the disciplinary development of nursing sciences and professional knowledge. In Italy, the master’s degree program is characterized by the expansion and strengthening of knowledge concerning the nursing discipline in order to acquire advanced skills for health protection, organization of services, professional training and healthcare, research. Objectives Analyze the study plans and programs proposed in the curricula of the LM/SNT1 courses to explore the contents of the nursing discipline (MED/45) which support the core competencies of professionals in master’s training. Materials and methods Quali-quantitative descriptive study. An ad hoc grid was created to map the training offer of the MED/45 modules, extracted from the form of the programme of the studies of the ‘universitaly’ website. The analysis of the titles and contents of the modules was carried out with deductive content analysis. Results The content analysis allows to highlight the variety of scientific fields taught in the master’s degree courses of the different universities. The national trend is to devote more space to the ‘organization of the profession’ but also paying attention to other areas such as ‘clinical nursing’ and ‘nursing research’. Discussion and conclusions The study highlights how some universities are redirecting teaching towards specific clinical and care areas to respond to a new need for advanced skills in community nursing. It will be useful to monitor these variations and understand both the support given to development by disciplinary research and how they can be effectively exploited in the workplace.
