Purpose: Reflecting on the professionalization of the teacher and the necessity/absence of a career. Methodology: critical reconstruction of the evolution of the teaching profession and regulatory attempts to design a career perspective. Findings: there’s a need for the emergence of a new, professionalised and further professionalised teaching figure, in whose future career possibilities may exist. Research limitations/implications: exist a legal limitation, the direct provision of a teaching career, and a formative one concerning in-service professionalisation that is not strictly framed. Originality: the career theme between the need for job role development and the possibility of implementation, with appropriate references to models already in use abroad.
