abstract:
Over the last years, the escalation of terrorist attacks which bloodied Europe have strongly affected the perception of personal and collective (in)security, further amplified by the media coverage of the attacks, aimed at providing alternative, if not opposite, frames of representation and interpretation with respect to the official storytelling of Islamist/jihadist terrorism. Thanks to a media content analysis focused on Avvenire and Il Sole 24 Ore (2014-2018), the paper investigates the “counter-narratives” of the terrorist attacks carried out by the two Italian newspapers, highlighting two different approaches. On one hand, Il Sole 24 Ore analyses the effects of terrorism on the world geopolitical balances, from a political and economic point of view; on the other hand, Avvenire points out the denial of a direct and mechanistic connection between terrorism and Islam, aimed at the construction of a wider religious and cultural integration.
