INTELLIGENZA ARTIFICIALE E ATTIVISMO DEGLI AZIONISTI. VERSO LA CORPORATE GOVERNANCE DELLE NUOVE GENERAZIONI?

Academic Article
Publication Date:
2025
abstract:
Artificial intelligence (AI) is set to reshape corporate governance, with shareholder activism standing out as a particularly compelling area. While institutional investors already leverage AI tools to optimize decision-making and risk management, it is among smaller investors that AI reveals the most untapped potential. By enabling real-time monitoring and analysis, AI empowers these traditionally sidelined players to amplify their influence and pursue strategies that were once out of reach. The Engine No. 1 campaign against ExxonMobil highlights how AI can drive innovative forms of activism, particularly among younger generations of investors. These individuals combine technological fluency with identity-driven values, using AI to advance causes such as environmental sustainability and diversity. However, the opportunities AI offers to millennial investors are not without significant challenges: risks include polarized interests, disproportionate influence by activist groups, and opaque algorithms. Despite these concerns, AI could encourage corporate leaders to embrace a more inclusive governance model—one that aligns technological progress with social innovation, integrating the values and priorities of emerging generations into the corporate landscape.
