Narrating Theresa May, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak in the British Press: A Comparative Discursive News Values Analysis

Chapter
Publication Date:
2026
abstract:
This study examines the representation of May, Truss and Sunak in the British press. The main aim is to investigate how these politicians were represented by the press and whether any similarities or differences reflect gender implications. The data were collected on LexisNexis during different timespans (their candidacy, appointment and resignation) and analysed following the Discursive News Values Analysis approach (Bednarek & Caple, 2017) in combination with qualitative tools (Machin & Mayr, 2023).
