Calcific tendonitis of the subscapularis tendon causing subcoracoid stenosis and coracoid impingement

Calcific tendonitis is a common disorder of the shoulder that usually responds to conservative treatment. When conservative management fails, arthroscopic treatment may be required. Although calcific deposits are most frequently described within the supraspinatus tendon, involvement of the subscapularis tendon is uncommon. This case report describes a 47-year-old patient with recurrent anterior shoulder pain. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated calcium deposits involving the subscapularis tendon associated with a large subcoracoid cyst. The calcific lesion produced subcoracoid stenosis and coracoid impingement. Arthroscopic treatment allowed identification and removal of the calcific deposits and treatment of the associated subcoracoid pathology.
